‘The purpose of life is to live a life of purpose’ – my version of Robert Byrne’s quote!
So, what does having and living with purpose actually mean?
Having a purpose is more than having a mission – it is a state of being, an emotional determination and commitment to pursing something worthwhile, not just for ourselves but for a wider world – a doing. It gives meaning to our lives, which is fundamental to our happiness and very existence.
You know when someone has a purpose, think of Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, or any sporting hero. You can see it in their eyes, hear it in their voice – they have an unshakable, unwavering belief inside them. They are resolute in their commitment to seeing something through and will allow nothing to derail them.
It took me until reaching a half-century to recognise my purpose, and then a few years more to actually do something about it, to start realising it. I think you would agree that it's no good keeping it as a best kept secret in your life, if it’s in anyway a contribution, it needs to be communicated, shared and to be inspiring others.
Perhaps you’ve known yours for a long time, but what are you actually doing about it?
Perhaps you know people who live with purpose - what makes them stand out?
They have an energy, they stand for something, they seem to be all knowing, they broadcast it, share it and commit to it.
What difference does it make?
Your purpose is the ‘rocket fuel’ for any worthwhile endeavour or achievement. It inspires others around you, and now more than ever don't we need inspiration?!
The CEO of an NHS business recently told me that over the last six months, at the height of the pandemic, their management team became clear about a common purpose. This inspired them to bring about changes within weeks that would normally have taken months to achieve.
Are you living your life or leading your business with a clear purpose? Does your team know what that is and how do people feel around you? Do they want to follow? Are they inspired?
Perhaps you’ve been clear about your purpose – personal and professional, (hopefully one in the same)– but with the disruption over the last six months has the voice of your purpose got lost?
As the world has stood still, does your purpose need to be revisited, reignited and re-communicated? Imagine if you and your team were truly inspired behind a common purpose, how quickly could you make change happen and what would the future look like?
In order to inspire others though, you first need to be inspired. So, perhaps the first question to answer is, what or who inspires you?
